The Run Down:
As soon as you walk into this family run place you feel welcome. The Burger is big. The 8 ounce homeburger has a nice flavour and is not too salty. The cooking on this occasion was a little too much as it was slightly burnt insted of evenly grilled and sightly dry. The quality of the meat was terrific; evenly ground with no hard chunks and not greasy, nice beef flavour with subtle seasonings. The bun was a bit of a let down, slightly toasted, which is nice, but unable to hold together with the burger and toppings. The toppings though were quite good, all the usual suspects with a few extras and all the veggies looking and tasting nice and fresh. The overall place could have been cleaner, but it wasn't horrible. The grill though could have used a once over, if only to limit the burnt edges. Above average service was quick and friendly. A point lost for adding mayo when garnishing my burger after I asked for no mayo; and a point gained for specifically avoiding putting a slice of tomatoe which was mostly core. A definate return visit in the future to try the Mojo Burger combo.

Johnny's

Location: Sheppard and Victoria Park

While to the best of our knowledge Johnny's does not offer a homeburger (a fresh ground beef patty), we did feel that any survey of burger joints had to include this iconic restaurant. They have been serving 'hit the spot' food for as long as I can remember and they are definately worth a visit.

The Run Down:

I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy this burger, infact, as soon as I finished it, and some great fries, despite being stuffed, I considered going back for another. But here's the thing, 1/4 pound for 1/4 pound, I just prefer a fresh ground beef patty. That being said, the flavour was good and it was cooked near to perfect, (cooked through but still moist, char marked, but not burnt). As for the bun, great choice. More a bakery roll than a processed bread feel. Strong enough to hold together with all the fixin's, but not tough. And the fixin's are good; great selection and everything fresh - no lettuce I could see, maybe tomorrow. The restaruant was clean and you can see the grill and prep area are well kept. Friendly and fast staff round out an enjoyable comfort food experience.
